Raw Meat for Real Man.....eh Real Dogs

Very few dog owners are devoted enough to create an all meat diet for his or her dog. In fact, most dogs live off of dry kibble and, if lucky, a few table scraps that have fallen to the floor. Dogs are carnivores. They were born to eat meat. They can tear apart tough, fatty bits of meat effortlessly. The teeth of a dog are specially equipped to handle carnage. The raw meat dog diet is controversial, as some veterinarians will say they believe in it wholeheartedly, while others will strongly oppose it. In most veterinary schools, it is taught that a dog must eat kibble exclusively, but many vets feed their own dogs raw meat diets. This method of feeding is definitely not for every pet owner, and it has not been proven to significantly benefit the dog.

Many risks are involved when it comes to feeding a dog a raw meat diet. A dog can easily choke on a bone or bits of it might injure his digestive system. Cattle that are raised for beef might be infected with E. coli or any number of diseases. A dog can easily contract Salmonella as well, though not quite as easily as a human being would. Many dog owners who use a raw meat diet report having had no problem with bacteria that is often present in raw meat, as the presence of bacteria does not always pose a threat. In fact, many dog owners who follow the raw meat dog diet have found their dogs to be more active and an improved appearance in the coat and teeth of their pets after switching diets.

Especially at first, it might be ideal to simply supplement a dog's diet with small amounts of raw meat, as a dog can and will survive on kibble, and live very well. Some dog owners find that it is efficient to feed dogs lean pieces of grilled chicken breast. Others still feed their dogs egg whites, which is known to be good for a healthy, shiny coat. Some dogs are even allowed to have the whole egg, shell and all, as the shell is full of calcium.

In the wild, many animals do eat the shells of eggs, so it is not the most unusual thing a dog can eat. When it comes to feeding your dog, it is best to do all of the research you can to make sure the specifics about your breed are kept in mind. All dog owners, no matter what they feed their dogs, should always regularly check a list of foods that can cause harm to dogs. Though, those who are inexperienced and not very well informed or do not have time to arrange a complicated diet for their dogs should stick to kibble and small meaty table scraps, as a rule.
